~ENGLAND 1470 ~
THE WARS OF THE ROSES

Elizabeth Hardacre has learned that a woman can be many things lover, confidante, traitor, and spy.
The death of her father whilst a prisoner, turns Elizabeth from the Earl of Warwick’s truest friend, to his deadliest enemy; for would he ever believe her capable of turning towards the House of York in the hour of his greatest need? Convinced that she must be reconciled with her family no matter what the consequences, and with Edward’s spymaster for company, Elizabeth embarks upon a journey that will test both her courage and her heart; a mission that only a woman can complete.
When her closest secret is betrayed to Warwick and an old adversary offers her his help, Elizabeth does not know whom to trust. Can she believe the secret he reveals? And can she trust him with dark secrets of her own?
Her only alternative is to stay with the hateful spymaster and hope for a swift return to England, even though that will bring an encounter she dreads.
Drawn ever deeper into intrigue, Elizabeth must hide both her identity and her loyalties to survive as she realizes that her feelings are more complicated than she would ever have believed.
From the soldiers’ towns of northern France, through exile in Bruges, to the battlefields of England, Elizabeth strives to do what she believes is right, though her actions only seem to wound the people she has come to care for. As the battle for England rages, Elizabeth must reconcile the choices she has made and learn what it is to forgive and to be forgiven.

I'm surprised this book doesn't have more reviewers. I think it's very, very entertaining. Plus the historical factor. I had never seen Warwick or Richard portraited this way. It was so entertaining I kept coming back to read during the day, which I normally don't do. It's a pleasure to review and give it the credit I think it deserves. It has a lot a fiction, but I didn't mind. If I want to read novels plus the history. So yes, it has fiction but it very well done, and the history is pretty accurate. It's good!

The novel is a sequel of "The colour of treason" where the main fictional female character Elizabeth Hardacre became the 18 years old lover to 41 years old Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick, the "Kingmaker". In this book the story goes from mid 1470 when the Earl switches Allegiance from York to Lancaster to the aftermath of Tewkesbury.

I admit to buying the book because after reading the preview I was intrigued by the other main fictional male character Jack de Laverton, one of Warwick's spies and a figure half knight in shining armour half seductive rogue, and the book did not disappoint me in that respect, which is luckily fairly relevant in the story. Where Jack goes, adventure and romance never fail to entertain the reader. As for Elizabeth and Warwick, however, too many tears, sighs, "Santa Maria" and unplausible behaviours for both a 15th C knight's daughter and the most powerful subject in England made the tale far less interesting.

Had the author concentrated on her fictional characters and left the "big players" more in the background, without trying to impose a romance on the historically power obsessed Warwick, however original the attempt was, the result would have been far better, but maybe there is a chance for a sequel where we can have more Jack de Laverton and less earls and princes for a change. Overall, this book makes for a rather different approach to fictional novels on the War of the Roses and will offer a pleasant read for a few hours fun, without claiming to offer anything else than that.
This is a good book if you are interested in the war of roses. A different perspective was achieved in this two part series. This book is from everything that I have read historically Accurate but more from the Warwick point of view. Edward the fourth does not seem as dazzling, which is probably more accurate.
